Which Famco Models This Applies To

Famco manufactured throat dampers in several series, and the right repair depends on which frame geometry is in your flue. The most common in Westchester County are the FD-series cast-iron throat dampers (typically 30″, 32″, or 36″ widths) and the lighter FDL-style assemblies found in prefab fireplace installations. The casting number is stamped on the right-hand frame rail, visible from the firebox with a flashlight. If the stamp is corroded, measure the throat opening width and depth, and note whether the handle mounts on the left or right side. That handedness matters; a reversed assembly will not seat correctly.

Signs Your Famco Damper Repair Is Failing

• The handle turns but the plate does not move. The linkage pin has sheared or the worm gear has stripped inside the cast-iron frame. This is the most common failure we see in Bedford homes with dampers older than fifteen years. The plate itself may be fine, but the mechanism that drives it is finished.
• Cold air pours down the chimney even when the damper is “closed.” The throat plate has warped or the frame has settled out of square, leaving a gap along the rear edge. In Bedford’s older homes with settling foundations, this gap often grows seasonally as the chimney breast shifts slightly.
• The plate falls open on its own after you close it. The counterbalance spring has lost tension or the pivot pin has worn oval. Famco springs are under significant load; a fatigued spring cannot hold the plate’s weight reliably.
• You see rust flakes or water staining on the damper frame. The steel has corroded through at the weld seams or the frame rails are scaling. Bedford’s wet springs and humid summers accelerate this once the original factory coating fails.

DIY or Call Us?

There is a safe middle ground here, and then there is a line you should not cross. You can safely check whether the handle turns freely, whether the plate moves with it, and whether you see obvious rust or warping from the firebox side. A flashlight and a fireplace poker will tell you most of what you need to know.

What you should not do is attempt to remove the damper plate or frame yourself. The plate is heavy cast iron, often positioned awkwardly above the smoke shelf, and the pivot pins are under spring tension. A dropped plate can crack the firebrick or damage the flue liner. More importantly, a damper that is reinstalled even slightly out of square will not seal, will not draft correctly, and may leak carbon monoxide into the living space. We have seen DIY swaps that looked straight from below but were canted three degrees off level, enough to leave a permanent gap. If it needs doing, we will tell you.
